Kathu Mining Museum

Opened in August 2009, is a very informative cultural and historical attraction. In the past Phuket was a major tin-producing centre and drew thousands of Chinese labourers who eventually settled on the island. In short, Phuket would not have its multicultural identity without tin.
The museum features displays of everything from tin mine models to a scene in an opium den. A visit with a guide (or someone who has some knowledge about Phuket's history) is recommended as, for now, most of the signs and descriptions are only available in Thai.
Kathu Mining Museum is located on the road between Loch Palm Golf Club and British Curriculum School and not so far from our hotel Peach Hill Resort (www.peach-hill.com, so you can take a taxi or shuttle bus approximately 20 minutes . You can't miss the entrance: a Sino-Portugese shaped double arch. Entrance is free but donations are accepted. Open from 08:00 to 16:00 - Closed on Sunday

Welcome Phuket King 's Cup Regatta

Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2009

Long recognised as one of the top events in the yachting world, both regionally and internationally, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is this year also being saluted as a major tourism attraction for Phuket. The annual event generates income and regional and global publicity highlighting Phuket as a world class marine lifestyle and sports destination. The regatta not only underscores the benefits of the greater Andaman Sea as a world sailing destination, but brings in around 2,000 additional high spending tourists who provide a 40 million baht direct boost to the island’s economy. Inaugurated in 1987 to mark the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyedej, the regatta has been held each successive year during the first week of December and with the 2009 event already promising to live up to its reputation as the ultimate showcase for Thailand’s seafaring heritage epitomised by His Majesty himself, the event’s organisers are anticipating the event will also demonstrate its value as an iconic tourism magnet. Kevin Whitcraft, president of the regatta’s organising committee said, “Perhaps more than any other event, the annual Phuket King’s Cup Regatta represents the island’s maritime tradition and unsurpassed natural beauty that combine to make it both a top international yachting and tourism destination. The seven-day regatta not only provides a direct boost to the local economy it creates global media attention on a daily basis at the beginning of the high season ushering in the holiday season with stirring images of the competition and Phuket’s stunning seascapes reaching an estimated 150 million households worldwide each year.” Registration for this year’s Phuket King’s Cup Regatta opens on 28th November with a practice race, skippers’ briefing, and the official opening ceremony taking place at Kata Beach Resort on November 29th. Competitors in this truly international yachting event regatta come from Australia, UK, China, Russia and beyond. Under Royal Patronage, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

The 23rd Phuket King's Cup Regatta will take place 28 November - 5 December, 2009, off Kata Beach, Phuket, Thailand. Loy Krathong Festivals 2009

Loy Krathong Festivals.

When : 02, November 2009
Where : Phuket Kata Thailand.

Loy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. "Loi" means "to float". "Krathong" is a raft about a handspan in diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern-day versions use specially made bread 'flowers' and may use styrofoam), decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks etc. During the night of the full moon, many people will release a small raft like this on a river. Governmental offices, corporations and other organizations also build much bigger and more elaborate rafts, and these are often judged in contests. In addition, fireworks and beauty contests take place during the festival.

Letting a Khom Fai float in to the air at the Loi Kratong festival in Kata Beach area www.peach-hill.com.
Thousands of Khom Fai in Kata beach. The festival probably originated in India as a Hindu festival similar to Deepavali as thanksgiving to the deity of the Ganges with floating lanterns for giving life throughout the year. According to the writings of H.M. King Rama IV in 1863, the originally Brahmanical festival was adapted by Buddhists in Thailand as a ceremony to honour the original Buddha, Siddhartha Guatama. Apart from venerating the Buddha with light (the candle on the raft), the act of floating away the candle raft is symbolic of letting go of all one's grudges, anger and defilements, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot. People will also cut their fingernails and hair and add them to the raft as a symbol of letting go of the bad parts of oneself. Many Thai believe that floating a krathong will create good luck, and they do it to honor and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha (พระแม่คงคา). The beauty contests that accompany the festival are known as "Noppamas Queen Contests". According to legend, Noppamas was a consort of the Sukothai king Loethai (14th century) and she was the first to float decorated krathongs. The Loi Krathong festival is also associated with the start of vegetable carving. The Thai tradition of Loy Kratong started off in Sukhothai, but is now celebrated throughout Thailand, with the festivities in chiang Mai and Ayutthaya being particularly well known. In Chiang Mai Loi Kratong is also known as "Yi Peng". Every year thousands of people assemble to float the banana-leaf krathong onto the waterways of the city, honouring the Goddess of Water. A multitude of Lanna-style sky lanterns (khom fai) are also launched into the air where they resemble large flocks of giant fluorescent jellyfish gracefully floating by through the skies. These are believed to help rid the locals of troubles and are also taken to decorate houses and streets. Phuket Thailand at Peach Hill Resort (http://www.peach-hill.com/) also has the same celebration, especially in the Kata Beach area. Many people visit the celebration each year.

Phuket - Vegetarian Festival

When : 17 - 26 Oct 2009 (annual)
Where : Phuket, Thailand

The Thai-Chinese in Phuket have long passed on the vegetarian festival to purify mind and soul by refraining from meat consumption and meditating. Symbolising the presence of the deities throughout the festival are 9 lanterns lit up and placed aloft on Ko Teng poles. On the 6th day of the festival, there will be religious processions and incredible displays of face-and-body piercing. On the last day, there will be a “Koi Han” ceremony to exorcize ill fortune and a farewell ceremony for the deities at night.

Every first day of the ninth lunar month the streets of Phuket come to life with the Vegetarian Festival. Devotees push steel rods through their cheeks and tongues in a gruesome display, marking the start of a purification period.
The ceremonies date back to the mid-19th century when a travelling Chinese opera company fell gravely ill. Fearing that they had let down their Gods, the actors performed self-mutilation rites to try and cure themselves. It is also celebrated by devout Chinese all over the world, although the island's five temples are the most famous venues. On day one gods, spirits and ghosts are petitioned for their mercy and assistance during the following nine days. Various ceremonies are performed in the temples and processions of white-clad devotees fill the streets. After dark on day six and seven believers gather to run over glowing charcoal. Of course, there are no burns on the feet to prove their journey. Day seven involves ladders with rungs of sharpened blades. Participants run up and down them, fuelled by a frenzied spiritual fervour. Days eight and nine involve another procession through the town. While the first one was white, this one is red. Several participants show off their spiritual prowess even further by piercing different parts of their bodies with iron needles, measuring up to four metres long.
